CycleUp

I designed CycleUp, a recycling platform that enables individuals, households, and neighborhoods to collaborate and increase recycling rates in their communities. CycleUp won the OpenIDEO x Coca-Cola Innovation Challenge, selected from over 300 submissions by global creative agencies, designers, and innovators.

Approach

Launched in partnership with OpenIDEO, Coca-Cola created a worldwide innovation challenge to find new solutions that would increase recycling rates. After in-depth research into the problems holding back higher recycling rates among individuals, families, and communities, I designed an online platform and smart scale accessory that tracked recycling rates, visualized the data, and rewarded users for improving their recycling rates.

I incorporated game mechanics to drive competition within communities and reward individuals and neighborhoods for taking collective action to boost recycling rates. Of the over 300+ projects submitted from creative agencies, designers, and innovators around the world, CycleUp was chosen as the winning project. CycleUp was later featured at the Disruptive Innovation Festival (DIF) and in university textbooks on recycling innovation.
